What is a PASS?

A Plan to Achieve Self-Support (PASS) lets you set aside money for a specific work goal. Income or resources set aside under an approved PASS don't count against your SSI, helping you save for education, training, starting a business, or work-related expenses.

  1. Contact your local Social Security office or call 1-800-772-1213
  2. Ask to speak with a PASS Cadre specialist
  3. Work with a benefits counselor to develop your plan
  4. Complete SSA Form SSA-545 (Plan to Achieve Self-Support)
  5. Submit your plan and wait for approval
