Receiving SNAP (food stamp) benefits isn’t a one-time process. To keep getting help each month, most households must complete a recertification—a routine review to confirm you’re still eligible.

If your recertification is coming up, don’t worry. It’s easier than it sounds—as long as you’re prepared.

In this post, we’ll explain:

  1. What SNAP recertification is

  2. When you need to complete it

  3. What documents you’ll need

  4. What happens if you miss the deadline

  5. How Purple helps you stay organized

1. What Is SNAP Re-Certification?

SNAP recertification (or renewal) is how your state re-checks your eligibility for food assistance. You’ll be asked to update information like:

  • Income

  • Household size

  • Expenses

  • Employment status

  • Any changes in address or circumstances

It’s usually required every 6 or 12 months, depending on your state and situation.

2. When Do You Need to Recertify?

Your state agency will send you a notice when it’s time to recertify. You might get a letter, email, or alert through your state’s benefits portal.

You’ll need to:

  • Complete and submit the recertification form by the deadline

  • Attend an interview (often by phone)

  • Provide supporting documents, if requested

States often notify you 30–60 days before your recertification is due.

3. What Documents Will You Need?

To complete your recertification, be ready to share:

  • Recent pay stubs (if employed)

  • Rent or mortgage info

  • Utility bills

  • Bank account balances

  • Proof of disability or other benefits (like SSI or SSDI)

  • Any changes in income or household members

Providing accurate, up-to-date information helps avoid delays or denials.

4. What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?

If you don’t submit your recertification on time:

  • Your SNAP benefits may stop

  • You may have to start a new application

  • It could take weeks to get benefits reinstated

If you’re running late, contact your local SNAP office immediately—they may offer a short grace period.

5. How Purple Helps You Stay on Track

SNAP recertification can feel overwhelming—but Purple helps you keep everything organized.

With Purple, you can:

  • Track monthly EBT deposits so you know when renewals are coming

  • Store important documents and receipts for your caseworker

  • Keep a record of benefits received for proof of income

  • See EBT and checking balances side by side

  • Get help organizing your paperwork, especially if you’re managing benefits for multiple people

It’s the easiest way to stay prepared for your next recertification.
