New SSA Rule: Identity Verification Now Required Starting March 31, 2025

The Social Security Administration is implementing major changes to online account access—and if you rely on SSA's digital services to manage your benefits, you need to take action before the deadline.

In this article, we'll cover:

  • What's changing with SSA's identity verification requirements
  • Who is affected by the new rules
  • How to complete identity verification through Login.gov or ID.me
  • Options for people who can't verify online
  • Why you should act before the March 31, 2025 deadline

What's Changing?

SSA is implementing stricter identity verification procedures for accessing my Social Security accounts and other online services. The changes are designed to prevent fraud and protect beneficiaries' personal information, but they require action from anyone who uses SSA's online systems.

Under the new rules, you'll need to verify your identity through Login.gov or ID.me, the federal government's identity verification systems. If you haven't already created and verified an account through one of these services, you'll need to do so to maintain access to your online Social Security account.

Who Is Affected?

Anyone who uses or wants to use SSA's online services will need to complete the identity verification process. This includes people who check their benefit statements online, manage their Medicare, change their direct deposit information, request replacement Social Security cards, or access other SSA online services.

If you currently have a my Social Security account, you may need to re-verify your identity under the new system. SSA recommends completing this process before the March 31 deadline to avoid any disruption in your ability to access online services.

How to Complete Identity Verification

You can verify your identity through Login.gov or ID.me. Both services offer multiple verification methods, including uploading photos of identification documents and taking a selfie that's compared to your ID photo.

If you have difficulty with the online verification process, in-person options are available. You can visit a Social Security office to verify your identity in person, though wait times may be longer as demand increases around the deadline.

What If You Can't Verify Online?

Not everyone can easily complete online identity verification. If you don't have a smartphone, lack required identification documents, or face other barriers, you can still access SSA services by visiting a local Social Security office in person or calling SSA's toll-free number.

SSA has committed to maintaining access for people who cannot complete online verification, but these alternatives may involve longer wait times. Plan ahead if you anticipate needing help with the process.

Take Action Before the Deadline

Don't wait until the last minute. Technical issues and high demand could make verification difficult as the deadline approaches. If you rely on SSA's online services, complete your identity verification well before March 31, 2025.
