If you need to switch the bank account where your Supplemental Security Income (SSI) gets deposited each month, the process is now easier than ever — and faster too.
You no longer have to visit your local Social Security office or wait 30 days to make the change. Thanks to a recent update from the Social Security Administration (SSA), most people can now change their direct deposit online, and it takes effect within 1 business day.
This article covers:
Why you might want to update your direct deposit
What you’ll need before you start
How to update your SSI direct deposit online
How Purple can help simplify everything
1. Why Change Your SSI Direct Deposit?
There are many good reasons to update your bank info:
You switched banks or opened a better account
Your old card stopped working
You want early access to benefits¹
You need a rep payee or dedicated account structure
You want better fraud protection or alerts
If you’re using a general prepaid card or traditional bank, you might be missing out on features built for SSI recipients — like what Purple offers.
2. What You’ll Need Before You Start
To update your direct deposit online, make sure you have:
A my Social Security account: ssa.gov/myaccount
Your new routing number and account number
Your identity verified with ID.me or Login.gov (SSA now requires this)
Access to your email or phone for 2FA login
If you’re updating the info for someone else (like a family member you serve as rep payee for), you’ll need to be listed as the payee on file with SSA.
3. How to Update Your Direct Deposit for SSI
Here’s how to do it:
Go to ssa.gov/myaccount and log in
Click “Manage Direct Deposit”
Enter your new account details
Confirm and submit
Note: As of March 31, 2025, changes take effect within 1 business day, not 30 days as before. This update helps prevent fraud and speeds up access to your benefits.
