How to Check Your SSI or SSDI Payment Status (Step-by-Step Guide)

Waiting for a benefit payment that hasn't arrived can be incredibly stressful—especially when you're counting on it for rent, groceries, or medication. Whether you're waiting on a regular monthly payment or a back pay award, knowing how to check the status of your SSI or SSDI payment can save you hours of anxiety and help you resolve issues faster.

In this article, we'll cover:

  1. How to check your payment status online through my Social Security
  2. What information the SSA payment status system shows
  3. How to check on SSDI back pay specifically
  4. What to do when your payment shows as "paid" but hasn't arrived
  5. How to contact SSA about a missing payment
  6. Common reasons payments are delayed and how to fix them

Checking Your SSI or SSDI Payment Status Online

The fastest way to check on your Social Security benefit payments is through your my Social Security account at ssa.gov/myaccount. If you don't already have an account, creating one is free and takes about 10 minutes—you'll need a valid email address, a U.S. phone number, and some personal information to verify your identity.

Once logged in, navigate to the "Payments" section of your dashboard. Here you can see your payment history, including the dates and amounts of recent deposits. This shows payments that SSA has issued—if a payment shows as processed on SSA's end but hasn't arrived in your bank account, the issue is likely with your bank or your direct deposit information.

What the SSA System Shows (and What It Doesn't)

Your my Social Security account shows you SSA's record of what was paid and when. It does not show your bank account balance or whether your bank has posted the funds. Think of it as SSA's receipt of payment—proof that they sent it.

If your account shows the payment was issued but your bank shows nothing, the next step is to contact your bank. Ask them to search for an incoming ACH transfer from the U.S. Department of the Treasury on the expected payment date. Banks can often trace a missing transaction the same day.

If your my Social Security account shows no payment was issued and your bank also shows nothing, there may be an issue with your benefit status, a suspended payment, or an address/banking information problem on file.

How to Check on SSDI Back Pay

SSDI back pay is the lump sum or installment payments SSA owes you for the period between your disability onset date and when your benefits were approved. Checking back pay status can be trickier since it's not a recurring monthly payment.

You can check the status of your back pay by:

  1. Logging into my Social Security and reviewing your payment history for any large, one-time deposits
  2. Calling SSA at 1-800-772-1213 and asking specifically about the status of your back pay award
  3. Contacting your SSA field office directly if you have a pending claim or recent award letter

SSA typically pays SSDI back pay in a single lump sum for amounts owed for less than three years. If back pay exceeds three years' worth of benefits ($148,272 at the 2026 average), SSA may pay it in up to three installments spaced six months apart to protect recipients from losing SSI eligibility due to the resource limit.

What to Do If Your Payment Shows as Paid But Hasn't Arrived

If SSA shows your payment was issued and your bank can't find it, you need to request a payment trace. Contact SSA and ask them to initiate a trace on the payment. SSA will then work with the U.S. Treasury to investigate what happened to the funds.

A payment trace can take several weeks to resolve. In the meantime, document everything: the payment date, the amount, your bank account information, and any confirmation numbers SSA gives you.

If the payment was returned to SSA (for example, because your bank account was closed), SSA will reissue it once you provide updated banking information—but this can take additional time to process.

How to Contact SSA About a Missing Payment

There are three ways to reach SSA about a missing payment:

By phone: Call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). Wait times are often long, especially early in the week and early in the month. Calling on a Wednesday or Thursday after 10 AM tends to have shorter hold times.

In person: Visit your local Social Security field office. You can find your nearest office using the SSA office locator at ssa.gov. Bring a photo ID and your bank account information.

Through my Social Security: For some payment issues, you can submit a message or request through your online account, though complex issues usually require a phone call or in-person visit.

Common Reasons Payments Are Delayed

The most common culprits for delayed SSI or SSDI payments include:

A recently updated bank account where SSA hasn't finished processing the change. A closed or frozen bank account that caused the payment to be returned. A change in your benefit status (such as an ongoing redetermination or review). A recent move where your address on file doesn't match your current information. Or a SSA system processing issue, which is less common but does happen.

The solution in most cases is to confirm your banking information with SSA and request a payment trace if needed.
