2026 SSI Payment Schedule: When Will You Get Paid?

If you receive Supplemental Security Income, knowing exactly when your payment will arrive each month matters—especially when you're budgeting carefully on a fixed income. SSI follows a specific payment schedule that doesn't always fall on the same day, and missing the nuances can leave you scrambling.

In this article, we'll cover:

  1. How the 2026 SSI payment schedule works
  2. Why SSI payments sometimes arrive earlier than expected
  3. The 2026 SSI payment amount for individuals and couples
  4. How direct deposit affects when you actually receive your funds
  5. What to do if your SSI payment is late or missing
  6. How SSDI payment dates differ from SSI

How the SSI Payment Schedule Works

SSI payments are issued on the first of every month. That's the standard rule. However, when the first falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, SSA issues the payment on the last business day before that date—meaning you'd receive it in late December, late March, etc. instead.

This "early payment" schedule can be confusing but is actually good news: you get paid a few days sooner. It does mean that some months you'll see two SSI payments within the same calendar month (the early payment for the following month plus the regular payment for the current one), which does NOT count as extra income for SSI resource limit purposes.

2026 SSI Payment Dates

Here is the complete 2026 SSI payment schedule:

  • January 2026 – Payment issued December 31, 2025 (New Year's Day observed)
  • February 2026 – February 2
  • March 2026 – March 2 (early, March 1 is Sunday)
  • April 2026 – April 1
  • May 2026 – May 1
  • June 2026 – June 1
  • July 2026 – July 1
  • August 2026 – August 3 (August 1 is Saturday)
  • September 2026 – August 31 (September 1 is Labor Day)
  • October 2026 – October 1
  • November 2026 – November 2 (November 1 is Sunday)
  • December 2026 – December 1

Note: The September payment arrives at the end of August due to Labor Day. This means you'll see two SSI deposits in August 2026—one on August 3 (the regular August payment) and one on August 31 (the September payment paid early).

2026 SSI Payment Amount

The standard SSI payment amounts for 2026 are:

  • Individual: $994 per month
  • Couple (both receiving SSI): $1,491 per month

These amounts represent the federal benefit rate. Your actual payment may be higher if your state supplements the federal amount, or lower if you have countable income, receive free housing or food from others, or live in certain institutional settings.

How Direct Deposit Affects Your Payment Timing

If your SSI benefit is deposited directly into a bank account, it typically posts at midnight on your payment date. With some banks, the deposit may show up a day or two early—particularly if your bank makes funds available when SSA notifies them of the pending payment.

With a Purple account, your benefits deposit when SSA releases them, and you can check your balance and transaction history any time. There are no surprise fees eating into your $994.

If you receive SSI via a Direct Express card, the funds are generally available on the payment date but not before.

What If Your SSI Payment Is Late?

If your payment date has passed and you haven't received your SSI deposit, your first step is to verify that SSA has your correct banking information on file. Log into your my Social Security account at ssa.gov or call SSA at 1-800-772-1213.

A missing payment can result from several things: a recently updated bank account number that SSA hasn't processed yet, a returned direct deposit due to a closed account, or a bank processing delay. In most cases, contacting SSA and your bank on the same day helps resolve the issue quickly.

If SSA shows the payment was issued but your bank shows nothing, ask your bank to initiate a trace on the transaction.

SSI vs. SSDI: Different Payment Schedules

SSI and SSDI follow different payment schedules, which confuses many people who receive both.

SSI is always paid on the first of the month (or the preceding business day as described above).

SSDI payment dates are based on your birthday:

  • Birthday on the 1st–10th: paid on the second Wednesday of the month
  • Birthday on the 11th–20th: paid on the third Wednesday of the month
  • Birthday on the 21st–31st: paid on the fourth Wednesday of the month

People who receive both SSI and SSDI (called concurrent beneficiaries) will have two different payment dates each month—one for each program.

Does an Early SSI Payment Count as Two Months' Income?

No. SSA does not count early SSI payments as double income for the month they're received. If you receive your September payment in late August because of a holiday, SSA still counts that as your September benefit—not as additional August income. This matters for your SSI resource limit calculations ($2,000 for individuals).
